Shawnee is one of the old coal towns up in the hills, best known for the long row of historic storefronts with their overhanging second story porches along Main Street. That architecture is a point of pride locally and it also means the village has a stretch of commercial frontage where the public walk, the entries and the parking in front genuinely matter to how the town presents itself. Away from Main Street it is hillside residential, with smaller lots, sloped yards and plenty of ground going up behind the houses. Like the other villages up this way, it is far enough off the main routes that regular service has historically been hard to come by.

Small villages up in these hills get skipped, and that is the gap we are filling. Shawnee is not out of the way for us because we are coming from Nelsonville rather than from a city an hour off, and the hill country here is the same ground we work everywhere else. For the commercial frontage along Main Street we take the walks seriously in winter, since that is the stretch people are actually on foot.
