Trimming and Edging in Nelsonville

The detail work is what makes a lawn look finished. We trim around fences, trees and beds and cut crisp edges along walks and drives.

What Are Trimming and Edging?

Trimming and edging are the two finishing steps that a mower cannot do on its own. Trimming is the string work around everything the deck will not fit against, meaning fence lines, foundations, tree trunks, mailbox posts, light poles, utility boxes, bed edges and the awkward corners every property has. Edging is different: it is cutting a clean vertical line where the lawn meets a hard surface, so the grass stops at the walk or the driveway instead of creeping over it in a ragged lip. Both get done on our regular visits, and we blow the debris off the concrete afterward so the work actually shows.

Why Are Trimming and Edging Necessary?

This is the part people see without knowing they are seeing it. Two lawns cut the same height look completely different when one has sharp edges and clean lines around the obstacles and the other does not. Beyond appearance, there is a maintenance reason. Grass left to grow over a driveway or a walk slowly takes ground back and traps moisture and debris at the edge, which works away at the concrete or asphalt over time. The same goes for growth left against a building or a fence post, where it holds damp against wood and siding. Keeping it cut back is a small job that heads off slower, more expensive problems.

What Is Required For Trimming and Edging?

The main thing is knowing what should not get trimmed. Young trees, new plantings, flowers along a foundation, ornamental grasses and anything you are deliberately letting grow in are all worth pointing out, because string line does not know the difference. Tree trunks are the one we are most careful with, since repeated trimming right against the bark damages a young tree. Guards or a ring of mulch around them solve it. We also need to know your preference along bed lines, since some people want a hard cut edge and others want it softer. Clearing stray items from the fence line and bed edges beforehand lets us get right up against them.
