Lawn Care and Snow Removal
Beds edged, weeded and mulched to an even depth, for homes and commercial property across Athens County.
Why Mulch
Most people buy mulch because it looks good, which it does. The rest of what it does is the reason it is worth doing properly. A mulch layer holds moisture in the soil so plantings are not relying on every rain, keeps the ground temperature steadier through a hot August and a cold February, and blocks the light that weed seed needs to get started.
It also gives a bed a defined boundary, which is what separates a bed that looks designed from a patch of plants with grass creeping into it. And it keeps a trimmer away from the base of your trees and shrubs, which quietly prevents the kind of damage that shows up two years later.
Depth
Two to three inches is the working range for most beds. Thinner than that and light still reaches the soil, so the weed suppression does not really happen and you are mulching again by midsummer. Much thicker and it starts working against you: water sheds off the top instead of soaking through, and mulch piled against a trunk or a stem holds moisture where the plant does not want it.
The volcano of mulch mounded up around a tree is the common version of this mistake, and it rots bark. We keep the mulch pulled back off the trunk and the stems, with the depth even across the bed rather than deep in the middle and thin at the edges. On a bed that already has good mulch under it, a lighter refresh is usually all it needs and we will say so rather than selling you depth you do not need.
Preparation
Mulch spread over a bed that was not prepared looks correct for about three weeks and then the same weeds come back through it. The preparation is most of the job.
Timing
Spring is the usual answer, once the ground has warmed up and the first flush of weeds has been cleared out. Mulching too early, while the soil is still cold, slows the ground down because the layer insulates against warming as effectively as it insulates against heat.
Fall is the other good window, especially for beds with plantings you want protected through the winter, since a layer going into the cold keeps the soil temperature from swinging and heaving roots. Either way the work pairs naturally with a cleanup, because the bed has to be cleared before it is mulched. If you are having a Yard Cleanup done anyway, doing both on the same visit saves the property being worked twice.
Commercial
Yes, and it is a large share of the mulch we install. Parking lot islands, the strip along a storefront, the beds at an entrance and the frontage along the road all read as maintained or neglected from a moving car, and mulch is the fastest thing that changes which one a property looks like.
On commercial work the scale changes the approach: we quote the yardage, schedule around your business hours so the lot is not blocked when customers need it, and keep the islands on a cycle rather than waiting for somebody to notice. For properties already on Commercial Lawn Maintenance with us, the beds are part of the standing schedule rather than a separate call you have to remember to make.
Common Questions
Hardwood mulch for most beds, in the color you want. If you have a preference, or you are matching mulch already on the property, tell us at the quote and we will source it.
Most beds want a refresh once a year to keep the depth and the color. Some hold up longer, and in that case the right answer is a lighter top up rather than a full install, which costs less.
Only when it makes sense for the bed, which is less often than people expect. Fabric works under stone and in beds that are not going to be planted into, but in a planting bed it tends to clog, shed water and surface in pieces after a couple of years. We will talk through it at the quote.
Yes, and a proper ring is better for the tree than grass to the trunk, because it keeps mowers and trimmers away from the bark. The key is depth and distance, so the mulch stays pulled back off the trunk rather than piled against it.
Usually not, because old mulch breaks down into the soil and is doing useful work down there. What does come out is the weeds, the debris and any crusted layer that is shedding water, and that leaves with us.
